Modelling and Control of FES-Assisted Indoor Rowing Exercise

چکیده
This paper presents the development of a model of indoor rowing exercise for paraplegics. Indoor rowing exercise is introduced as a hybrid exercise for restoration of function of lower extremities for paraplegics through the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES). Two stimulated muscle models, quadriceps and hamstrings, are developed for knee extension and flexion. A fuzzy logic control strategy is designed to control the rowing manoeuvre. Simulation results verifying the control strategy are presented and discussed.

Inclined Ergometer to Enhance FES-Assisted Indoor Rowing Exercise Performance
Improving the FES-assisted indoor rowing exercise (FES-rowing) performance enables the spinal cord injury (SCI) people to perform hybrid FES-exercise in a higher level of intensity. High level of exercise volume and intensity can play a big role in prevention of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity which is a significant threat to the health of people with chronic SCI. FES-rowing...

Concept 2 indoor rowing machine (Concept 2 Inc., USA), an exercise and training machine for able-bodied population, was modified for total body exercise in paraplegia. A new seating system provides trunk stability and constrains the leg motion to the sagittal plane. A 4-channel electrical stimulator activates the quadriceps and hamstrings in drive and recovery phases of rowing cycle. Force sens...
متن کاملQuadriceps oxygenation during steady state FES-rowing in persons with spinal cord injury
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) rowing is an effective and well-tolerated type of cardiovascular exercise for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). However optimal health and fitness benefits can only be achieved if the exercise time is sufficient. Due to the consequences of paralysis and the nature of surface FES, muscular fatigue is a common problem in electrically stimulated muscles...
متن کاملDevelopment of FES-rowing machine with quadriceps stimulation and energy storing device
A novel technique for developing functional electrical stimulation (FES)-rowing exercise by using only quadriceps stimulation and energy storage devices is developed exclusively for paraplegic individuals. The purpose of this study is to apply a new method in the recovery phase by inserting an elastic cable to link between the arm force and the seat. In the modified model the number of stimulat...

Functional electrical stimulation (FES)-induced leg exercise offers the potential for individuals with lower-limb paralysis to otherwise gain some benefits conferred by leg exercise. Although its original intent is to reactivate the leg muscles to produce functional upright mobility, as a rehabilitation therapy, FES-evoked exercise increases the whole-body metabolism of individuals with spinal ...
